Why Reporting Matters
Every whale sighting helps scientists track the movement and health of the North Atlantic right whale population. Accurate, timely reports allow researchers to identify migration routes, feeding areas, and potential threats such as ship traffic or entanglement zones.
Before You Report
If you see a right whale, please follow these safety and ethical guidelines:
- Keep a safe distance — at least 500 yards (460 meters) away.
- Do not approach, chase, or try to feed the whale.
- Take clear photos if possible, but never risk safety to do so.
- Record details such as location, date, time, number of whales, and behavior.
How to Report a Sighting
You can report sightings to official marine authorities or research organizations. If you are in U.S. or Canadian waters, use the following:
- U.S. East Coast: Call 866-755-6622 or contact the U.S. Coast Guard via VHF Channel 16.
- Canadian Waters: Contact the Marine Animal Response Society (MARS) at 1-866-567-6277.
- Online reporting: Visit the NOAA Whale Reporting Portal or regional wildlife websites.
